Janglin, directed by Nina Di Salvo and Whitney Stephenson, is a spec music video for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's song "Janglin."
The narrative music video follows a group of LOST BOYS as they roam around their neighborhood woods and find a seemingly abandoned fortress. It isn't until later that they realize "their new home" belongs to someone else, THE CARNIVORES, who don't take kindly to trespassers. A fight scene ensues in this childhood fantasy in a small town.
I was also the production designer and art director for the music video and did extensive work with the entire art department.

to the song and it was used for purely academic purposes.

BEAT SHEET
VERSE 1
Lost Boys roam in the wilderness, searching for the perfect spot for their fort.
The Boys start building a fortress, until one boy finds an "abandoned" fort.
CHORUS
The boys run to the site of the new fortress and marvel over its perfection.
VERSE 2
The Carnivores are revealed, returning home from a successful hunt.
They discover The Lost Boys in their fort, and don't take kindly to strangers.
The Carnivores take the boys to their version of jail and show them their fate.
CHORUS
The Carnivores return to the fort to put on their war paint as one Carnivore stands watch over the boys.
One of the Lost boys escapes during this time, the carnivores are alerted of the fleeing boy.
BRIDGE
Chase sequence.
The boy who escaped leaves behind his tool at the jail space, allowing the rest of the boys to escape and take over the fortress, and their weapons.
The Lost Boy who escaped leads the carnivores to the fortress where, to the Carnivores surprise, the rest of the Lost Boys have assembled, prepared to fight.
CHORUS
Fight sequence.
The Carnivores are getting the upper hand, a final dual ensues until two hands pull the children back into... REALITY!
It is revealed that the children have been playing make believe this entire time and the 'epic dual for the fortress' has transpired in the one of the children's backyard.

LYRICS
VERSE 1
Well our mamas they left us
And our daddies took a ride
And we walked out of the castle
And we held our head up high
Well we once were the Jesters
In your Kingdom by the sea
And now we're out to be the masters
For to set our spirits free, set free
CHORUS
We want to feel ya!
We don't mean to kill ya!
We come back to Heal ya, Janglin soul
Edward and the Magnetic Zeros
VERSE 2
Well your wartime is funny
Your guns don't bother me
I said we're out to prove the truth of
The man from Galilee
Well your laws are for dummies, yes
Your institutions dead
I say we're out to blow the trumpet
To wake you all from bed, from bed
CHORUS
We want to feel ya!
We don't mean to kill ya!
We come back to heal ya, Janglin soul
Edward and the Magnetic Zeros
BRIDGE
We carry the mail
We carry it home
We carry the mail now
We carry it home
Scare up your letters
Give us your tales
Blowing like whale now
To magnetic ears
Wow!
CHORUS
We want to feel ya!
We don't mean to kill ya!
We come back to heal ya, Janglin soul
Edward and the Magnetic Zeros

Additional Sketches
Based on free materials we were able to require and minimal buys.
Our approach to designing the space was unique. Instead of establishing vision, finding the supplies/creating a resources spreadsheet, and budgeting the department based on that vision, we really took on a forager approach.
Our entire budget for this film was under $1500, so in order to create a massive fortress that would appear large to a party of 6 children, I drove to various piping, auto parts, and construction companies (with Byrds cookies in tow) to discuss the project and ask if there were any parts they were going to get rid of, recycle, or like to donate.
We met some very kind, giving people during this time, and had enough free materials to create a 'foragers fortress.' The design that came about was completely constructed around what materials were available and was constructed in three days.
We did end up buying ropes to create the necessary elevation around our central tree, along with various tool and truck rentals to aid the creation of this fort which took us three days to transport materials, assess, construct, and refine to give us the finished design.

Fight Choreography
We worked with Isaac Spooner, actor and fight choreographer, to establish basic hand-to-hand and weapon fight choreography that we could devise for our young actors. Above is a brief video Whitney took while Isaac was working through elementary motions with me. We've been very gratful to have so many people assist us with the sucess of this project.
